Summary

The lack of integrated plans for provision of the central applications software necessary for routine business (most of the software discussed above should be considered routine) must be addressed immediately.

For the (near) future, it is essential to put in place systems for tracking software in use or in demand, and to ensure that this software is purchased in the most cost effective way. The emphasis should not be on deciding what software people should use, but rather on facilitating the acquisition and use of the software that the academic community finds appropriate for its diverse and evolving needs.
