Grading Policies for Physics 231

This course will have two midterm exams, one final, and thirteen problem sets. The weight of each section is as follows:

You will notice that the problem sets have a rather large weight. This is because they form a very important component of the course. Each problem set will consist of approximately five problems, each worth ten points. These problems are all difficult, and partial credit will be given generously. Approximately one problem a week will require using a MATHEMATICA. Do not feel restricted to using the computer for only this problem.

You are encouraged to work together on your problem sets, but each individual must hand in his/her own write up. It will not benefit any of us if you decide to divide up the problems amongst yourselves and only attempt part of the problem set. Do not do this. Only write up solutions or partial solutions to the problems that you have worked on yourself, and that you understand how to explain to someone else. Homework solutions that are identical will receive zero credit! Make sure you always write up your results in your own words.

More guidance for the homework can be found in the course advice page.

Homework must be turned in on time. I will deduct 10 points for each day homework is turned in late, unless prior arrangements have been made.

The midterms exams will be at night and will be 90 minutes long. They will consist of three questions each. The first midterm will be on Wednesday Oct. 15, and the second will be on Wednesday Nov. 19.

The final will be during exam period and will be two hours long. It will consist of four questions.
